336 Front Street: Lahaina Home as Art - Potentially

336 Concrete

Some may see concrete only as hard and cold. Concrete can have expressions like no other material. The varying textures within inches of each other is a perfect example. Very few can imagine a home as being a work of art. Only a few homes can be in this category and with details like this, I have one for you that has all the makings to be a spectacular Maui showpiece. I'm just looking for the right buyer with vision.

336 Front

336 Front Street (MLS# 367938) - Just reduced to $1,099,000. 4 bed, 3 bath, 4,073 sqft, guest house/ohana 323 square feet, and pool - all on a .27 acre lot

But before I tell you about the house, let me tell you a little about the history I have with it even before I ever became a Realtor. When I was little, Sunday afternoons entailed piling into the family car for a drive off to somewhere far. For a Maui boy, that meant Lahaina, Kihei, or Upcountry. It seems like Lahaina was the most frequent option as it seemed "exotic."

They were beginning to develop Kaanapali and had just completed the old Whaler's Village Shopping Center (current one looks nothing like the original :-/ ). If you can believe that there was only one Crazy Shirts T-Shirt shop, it was at Whaler's Village. We'd often drive the lower road, Front Street, to get to our destination. I often remember passing a large concrete house with blue trim. I liked it because it was unusual and nothing like I had ever seen before. That must have been my earliest moments of being fascinated with architecture.

Fast forward many years, I'm writing to tell you about that exact house. I'm not just driving by it, I've co-listed it and have been showing it to prospective buyers. It was a pretty surreal moment when I drove up to it for the first time. All I've ever seen of it was from the street.

I got out of my car to see the towering sides of it as well. Even though I'm a bigger person now, it still seems large to me. The structure itself is mainly poured concrete towering 3 stories tall. The current physical state seems ready for a new iteration, however, the structure itself is pretty stunning.

Noteworthy Features

The double door entry is slightly subterranean with a 3-car garage to the left and a family room to the right. The star of the house is the massive staircase and 3-story entry with skylight. It's pretty indescribable and is something that you have to see in person. Even the pictures will not do it justice.

The second level offers 2 en suite master bedrooms, and the upper floor is the main living level. The home has a large and open living, dining, and kitchen area, powder room, and true master suite with an outdoor shower. Awesome ocean views are had from this level.

I haven't given much to describing the rooms because the home needs a complete tear out/remodel. A lack of love has left its mark on the home, for now. I've been so taken by the house, I've neglected to mention that it has one of the deepest pools I've ever seen as well as a guest house.

With that in mind, the photos that I share with you are rough, however, you may be one of the few who could re-imagine this home as a "Dwell Magazine" remodel. It won't be cheap, but when complete, there will be no other house to compare this to on this island.

Ideal Location

Now let's talk location. You'd be directly across the street and about 140 yards away for beach access of one of Lahaina's best. The most recent sale was a beachfront home of 2,000 square feet with ohana that sold for $2.4 mil. All the shops, restaurants and entertainment in the Front Street area are about a 20 minute walk away.

Oh yeah, back to the home as art thought. A well designed home takes into account many aspects. Most important to me is the availability of light and how that light can be manipulated.

A Spectacular Maui Showpiece?

The new owner of this home has a lot of good bones to work with. This could truly be re-imagined into an amazing showcase home. Blow away all the interior walls, revealing massive, industrial concrete walls. The new design could meet all the requirements for modern living and more. Make this your Manhattan loft within steps to the beach. With the right guidance and probably a deep pocket, nothing could be so quite unique as this.
